Traverse City, located on Grand Traverse Bay and at the base of Old Mission Peninsula and the Leelanau Peninsula, is a recreational wonderland for all seasons. In the spring, cherry blossoms turn the landscape into an impressionist painting of stippled colors. Summer offers all the joys of a water wonderland: swimming, sailing, boating, waterskiing, and fishing. Autumn brings delightful colors and scenic drives perfect for “leaf peeping.” Winter is a snowy paradise when lake-effect snows from Lake Michigan create endless options for skiing, ice skating, and snowmobiling. The area is renowned for exceptional golf and ski resorts and fabulous dining. There are many local wineries offering wine tasting and tours, and it is just a short drive up the Leelanau peninsula to a casino.
Traverse City offers easy access to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with towering dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan, scenic drives, a historic lifesaving station, and a restored logging village. The Cherry Capital of the World, Traverse City has orchards of cherry trees which thrive in the sandy soil while Lake Michigan tempers the winter wind and cools the heat of summer. With 3.8 million tart cherry trees, Michigan produces 70 to 75 percent of the tart cherries grown in the United States.
With its seasonal delights, abundance of cultural and arts activities, and tourism appeal, the Grand Traverse area is a sought-after retirement location.
In 1847, Captain Boardman of Naperville, Illinois, purchased land and built a saw mill at the mouth of the Boardman River, which flows through Boardman Lake to the west arm of Grand Traverse Bay. This was the beginning of what became Traverse City. Today, Boardman Lake is a blue oasis in the center of Traverse City, with many nearby parks and public facilities, including the Boardman Lake Trail, a paved walking path that encircles the lake and passes beside Boardman Lake Glens for easy access to peaceful, scenic walks. Located on the east shore of Boardman Lake, all three of our residences command beautiful views of the setting sun.
